What is FSMA?
“About 48 million people (1 in 6 Americans) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die each year from foodborne diseases, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is a significant public health burden that is largely preventable.
The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), signed into law by President Obama on Jan. 4, enables FDA to better protect public health by strengthening the food safety system. It recognizes that preventive control standards improve food safety only to the extent that producers and processors comply with them. Therefore, it will be necessary for FDA to provide oversight, ensure compliance with requirements and respond effectively when problems emerge.”

In April of 2017, the FDA put into force the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Continental Logistics has opted to be ahead of the curve, and has already become certified by Iron Apple International for finishing the Training Requirements for FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act)! Continental Logistics employees have completed The Iron Apple Food Safety Training Program that consists of a 4 part e-learning solution. The online training materials and documentation adhere to FSMA and is suited for any person who is involved with the transportation of food throughout the United States and Canada (Carriers, Shippers and Brokers).
Continental Logistics joins other major food carriers in the USA that have been certified by Iron Apple – in terms of being prepared and compliant for The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act. Continental Logistics also is compliant in Canada (CFIA) after completing the training program. Iron Apple International is currently the only company that performs this specific online training, documentation, and policies and procedures to their clients. The training should be the first checkpoint in any company’s journey to being FSMA compliant.
The training includes four modules:
- Module 1 – Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Overview
- Module 2 – Food Safety for the Transportation Industry
- Module 3 – Good Transportation Practices for the Sanitary Transport of Food
- Module 4 – Sanitary Transport Driver Training
